  • Publication of the book “World3 et le rapport Meadows, les limites à la croissance – Questions raisonnées pour aujourd’hui”
The year 2022 marked the 50th anniversary of the report “The Limits to Growth” to the Club of Rome. This report on the limits to physical growth in a finite world is an iconic work in sustainability science. In order to celebrate and popularize it, the STEEP team coordinated the edition of a FAQ on this report, the underlying World3 model, and limits to growth in a broad sense. Scientists and members of civil society were interviewed to collect a wide range of questions: on the model as such, underlying assumptions, the public and scientific reception of the report, its destiny after the initial publication, its impacts, and so forth. The finally produced book aims at popularizing the issues raised by one of the first acts of global systemic modeling, widely known in the 1970s but mostly forgotten since.

  • Jérôme Malick was awarded the Jean-Jacques Moreau prize by the SMF in partnership with the SMAI and the Académie des Sciences.
The Jean-Jacques Moreau Prize is awarded to researchers in decision mathematics and optimisation. It is awarded by the Académie des Sciences and the French mathematical societies SMF and SMAI. The 2023 Jean-Jacques Moreau Prize is awarded to Jérôme Malick for his remarkable results in non-smooth optimisation. His work lies at the crossroads between practical problems and modern extensions of convex analysis. His most significant contributions include pioneering work in variational analysis and, more recently, in machine learning (distributed, federated and robust learning). Jérôme Malick heads the DAO team at the LJK, and some of the work rewarded by this prize is the result of collective work within the team. https://www.ins2i.cnrs.fr/fr/cnrsinfo/prix-jean-jacques-moreau-jerome-malick-informatique-et-mathematiques-tournees-vers-les

  • Sophie Achard was awarded the 2023 CNRS silver medal for her work in statistics applied to neuroscience.
Sophie Achard's research makes it possible to analyse networks on which signals are propagated. By using graph theory in neuroscience for the first time, she has made a remarkable contribution to our understanding of how the human brain works. Her collaborative research has also advanced our understanding of neurological dysfunction and the mechanisms that are put in place to compensate for it. For example, the data she collected showed that hyper-connected hubs of neurons can recover, even when there is persistent damage after a coma. The statistical methods she has developed help to identify individual-specific neurological markers with greater precision, paving the way for personalised medicine. The adoption of these techniques by clinicians illustrates the practical value of mathematics to society. [source: Talents CNRS]
