Coupled PDE-ODE systems: applications to traffic flow modeling and control

We present a class of coupled PDE-ODE models describing the interaction of a single (possibly autonomous) vehicle with the surrounding traffic. The traffic flow is described with a scalar conservation law while the single vehicle trajectory is described by an ODE. The presence of the vehicle induces a moving bottleneck, hindering traffic flow. We prove existence of solutions via a wave-front tracking algorithm and propose two different numerical schemes. We will propose some control and estimation strategies for the problem and show theoretical, numerical and experimental results.
