Control of Energy in Nonlinear Granular Crystals

Granular crystals, defined as ordered aggregates of elastically interacting
particles, have drawn interest the last years. These media come not only in
different varieties (homogeneous, heterogeneous, disordered), but can be
tailored to have tunable responses, ranging from linear, to weakly and
strongly nonlinear. In this talk, we describe recent work on granular
crystals. We explore fundamental phenomena, related to vibrational energy
localization, re-distribution, and rectification enabled by the spatial
discreteness, asymmetry and nonlinearity of granular crystals. In addition
to this fundamental exploration, we note, how an understanding of dynamic
phenomena in granular crystals can enable the design of novel engineering
